Graciosa Island with Coasteering

Take the challenge of Graciosa Island with Coasteering in an experience full of Nature and Adventure activities to discover the charms of the White Island.

Graciosa Island has an elongated forma because of its 12.5 length kilometres and the 7 max width kilometres from Northeast to Southeast. Its 4 391 inhabitants (data from 2011) are spread by its 60.66 km2  that constitute the island’s surface. It is the northerner island of the Central Group of the Azorean archipelago and the closest island is São Jorge at 37 km distance. Graciosa’s highest point is in the South edge of the island’s Caldera with 405 metres in the coordinates 39º 01' 18. 165" latitude, North and 27º 58'00.29" longitude, West.

Graciosa Island is classified by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, it’s the second smallest of the archipelago and it’s also the one with less relevant landform, with several plane areas and soft mountains. White Stones (Pedras Brancas), White Mountain (Serra Branca) or White Clay (Barro Branco) are toponyms of the island that are related to the presence of a volcanic rock, the trachyte, common in the Island and once altered, rotten by the years, gets a whitish coloration, the reason why the Island is called the White Island.

When we arrived at the Carapacho islet and already equipped, we jumped into the sea and started Coasteering on Graciosa Island in the Azores archipelago.

This is the island with the best natural conditions for the practice of Coasteering, in an environment surrounded by natural islets with its slopes cut by volcanic rock, a sea of clear waters and a landscape where wild nature is always a constant. We gone a do several jumps (optional), cross through small caves, swimming in the small islets and snorkling.

Throughout the activity the customers are monitored by ours guides and monitors, who will assist in the execution of techniques and all safety procedures. This activity finish at Termas do Carapacho with a thermal bath at 40º to relax and recover from the emotions of Coasteering before lunch.

Coasteering in Graciosa Island in Azores

In the afternoon and after lunch, we will visit Furna do Enxofre cave, which is a Natural Monument of the Azores and one of the largest lava caves in the world, with the main characteristic of a perfect dome ceiling that covers it, formed by lava prisms.

We will also have horse riding, with a professional instructor that will be one of the highlights of this tour. After a tour around the island of Graciosa, stopping at the main points of interest, we will finish this tour at the cheesecake factory of "Queijadas da Graciosa" where they could buy this typical sweet already famous in the world. The return is in the afternoon, with boat crossing the channel between the islands of Graciosa and São Jorge.
